Our Impact
From using sports to unite communities to offering shelter and support for survivors of SGBV, Foundation of Hope – Kibera is transforming lives. Our initiatives empower youth to become change-makers, fostering creativity, resilience, and hope for a better tomorrow.
Join us in unleashing the potential of Kibera’s youth and building a community where every child can thrive. Together, we can create lasting change.
1. Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
We provide a safe shelter for girls aged below 18 who have survived gender-based violence. Our support includes access to education, counseling, life skills training, and empowerment programs such as sanitary towel and hygiene kit distribution. The shelter offers a secure environment where survivors receive psychological and social support, allowing them to heal and rebuild their lives. In addition to direct intervention, we work closely with local authorities and community leaders to raise awareness about GBV and promote preventive measures. Our outreach initiatives engage both men and women to challenge harmful gender norms and create safer spaces for girls and young women in Kibera.
2. Education & Empowerment
Education is a powerful tool for transformation. We offer partial scholarships, learning materials, mentorship programs, and life skills training to ensure that financial barriers do not limit children’s academic potential. Our mentorship programs provide guidance on career development, leadership, and social responsibility, helping students become agents of change in their community. Additionally, we integrate behavior change education to equip young people with the knowledge and decision-making skills necessary to navigate challenges related to health, peer pressure, and personal development. By investing in education, we create pathways for sustainable progress and empowerment.
3. Home-Based and Social Support Programs
We provide home-based and social support to individuals and families facing significant challenges. This includes regular home visits to offer emotional and practical assistance, hospital outreach for patients in need of care, and community-based programs to foster resilience. These initiatives aim to address the immediate needs of vulnerable populations while promoting long-term stability. Our work ensures that those in crisis have access to the necessary support systems and resources to improve their circumstances.
4. Dance, Theatre, Fine Arts and Culture
- Cultural Dance Program: Our dance program preserves cultural heritage while generating income to sustain our shelter and education programs. Performances at events provide young participants with confidence, discipline, and a source of livelihood.
- Drama & Theatre: We use performance, poetry, and storytelling to engage the community in conversations about gender equality, health, and social issues. Our drama productions raise awareness about pressing concerns, encouraging community dialogue and action.
- Visual Arts & Innovation: Through drawing, painting, sculpting, beadwork, knitting, and pictorial arts, we nurture creativity and provide youth with a platform for self-expression. This initiative enables young artists to explore career opportunities in the creative industry while using art as a tool for advocacy and social impact.
5. Sports for Social Change
Sports bring people together and serve as a platform for social messaging. Our programs include football, volleyball, and netball, which are used to foster unity and disseminate thematic messages about health, equality, and empowerment. These activities engage young people in productive ways while promoting teamwork, discipline, and community awareness. Sports also provide an avenue for youth to develop life skills, build relationships, and contribute positively to their environment.
6. Environmental Conservation
Environmental conservation is vital for the health and sustainability of the Kibera community. Foundation of Hope – Kibera engages youth in cleaning rubbish, clearing drainage channels, and planting trees. These activities improve sanitation, reduce the risk of disease, and enhance the overall living environment. By involving young people in these initiatives, we instill a sense of responsibility and community ownership, contributing to a cleaner and healthier Kibera.
Our environmental programs focus on improving Kibera’s living conditions through community-led cleanups, drainage clearing, waste management, fair recycling initiatives, and tree planting. These activities create a healthier environment while instilling a sense of ownership and responsibility among youth.
8. Mental Health Awareness & Well-being
Mental health is a crucial component of our work. We offer play therapy, behavior change education, and counseling to children and youth dealing with trauma and social challenges. We also provide team-building activities that strengthen social bonds and promote resilience. Through our mental health awareness campaigns, we work to break the stigma surrounding psychological well-being, ensuring that young people and families in Kibera have access to support and resources.
