who we are

About Us

Founded in October 2006, Foundation of Hope – Kibera is a legally registered community-based organization dedicated to empowering children and youth in Kibera through education, talent development, and social support. We provide safe spaces, mentorship, and sustainable programs that address critical social issues and foster community transformation.

Our mission

To empower children and youth in Kibera to overcome generational poverty through education, arts, cultural programs, and sustainable community initiatives.

Our vision

A future where every child in Kibera has the opportunity to reach their full potential, live with dignity, and inspire positive change within their community.

Our story

Founded to address the unique challenges faced by children in Kibera, Foundation of Hope started with a vision of creating safe spaces and opportunities for growth. Today, we rescue girls from gender-based violence, provide education and life skills, and sustain operations through innovative programs like cultural dance and community cleanup initiatives.

Our Story

Foundation of Hope – Kibera began as an initiative to unite young people in Kibera, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements, through their talents. From sports to theatre and environmental conservation, our programs have grown to address pressing issues such as education, gender-based violence, and community health. Over the years, we’ve empowered over 375 children and youth, creating pathways for brighter futures.

What we Do

Our primary causes

  • Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence
Our girls’ shelter is a safe haven for survivors of gender-based violence, offering care, education, and opportunities to rebuild their lives with dignity and independence.

  • Education Support
We provide partial funding to help children in Kibera access education, unlocking opportunities for a brighter and more empowered future.

  • Home-Based and Social Support Programs
Through home visits, hospital outreach, and community-based care, we offer practical and emotional support to vulnerable individuals and families.

  • Emergency Response & Disaster Relief
We provide disaster response kits to assist families affected by fire, flooding, and other emergencies in Kibera. Our rapid response efforts ensure that affected individuals receive immediate shelter, food, and essential supplies. We also collaborate with emergency response teams to develop strategies for disaster preparedness, helping communities mitigate risks and recover effectively.
  • Theatre and Drama Arts
By using performance, poetry, narratives, and plays, we engage youth in addressing critical social themes such as gender equality, health, and resilience.

  • Sports for Social Change
Through football, volleyball, and netball, we unite youth and foster social awareness, using sports as a platform for thematic communication and community building.

  • Environmental Conservation
Engaging young people in activities like rubbish collection, drainage clearing, and tree planting, we contribute to creating a cleaner, healthier Kibera.

  • Mental Health Awareness & Well-being
Mental health is a crucial component of our work. We offer play therapy, behavior change education, and counseling to children and youth dealing with trauma and social challenges. We also provide team-building activities that strengthen social bonds and promote resilience. Through our mental health awareness campaigns, we work to break the stigma surrounding psychological well-being, ensuring that young people and families in Kibera have access to support and resources.
